Arguably the most important name in the electronics industry, the name Motorola came into being as far back as 1930 when Galvin Manufacturing Corporation wanted a brand name for its new car radio (which was the first radio able to overcome static interference from under the hood). To name a few of its many accomplishments, Motorola introduced the world's first hand-held walkie-talkie in 1940, supplied NASA with radios for decades including for the first moon landing in 1969, demonstrated the first hand-held portable phone in 1973, and introduced the world's first 2-way pager. Part of Motorola's semiconductor business was spun off into ON Semiconductor in 1999 which was then divested along with the rest of its semiconductor business to form Freescale Semiconductor. In 2011, Motorola was divided into two independent companies, Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions.
