Xilinx, Inc. leads the world in providing all-programmable FPGAs, SoCs, MPSoCs and 3D ICs. It was founded by former employees of Zilog Corp. After Zilog engineer, Ross Freeman failed to convince the Zilog company to develop his idea of a blank programmable chip, he left to pursue development of his concept. In the 1980's Xilinx introduced the first FPGAs to the world and by 2013 the company was making $2.2 billion in sales. Altera, Microsemi, and Lattice Semiconductor are Xilinx's strongest competitors; however, Xilinx still owns the largest part of the market.
